First Mention Rate

Measure how often your entity is mentioned first among competitors in AI responses.

First Mention Rate

The First Mention Rate tracks how often your entity appears before all competitors in AI responses. In traditional search, ranking #1 is the ultimate goal. In generative AI responses, being mentioned first carries similar weight -- the first recommendation is the one users are most likely to remember and act on.

Definition

The First Mention Rate represents the percentage of valid AI responses where your entity appears at an earlier character position than any competitor entity.

Formula

First Mention Rate = firstMentionedResponses / validResponses
  • firstMentionedResponses: The number of AI responses where your entity appears before all configured competitor entities.
  • validResponses: The total number of AI responses successfully received.

A response only counts toward the first mention rate if:

  1. Your entity is mentioned in the response.
  2. At least one competitor is also mentioned (or could have been mentioned based on the prompt context).
  3. Your entity's first occurrence appears at a lower character position than the first occurrence of any competitor.

Important: Overall view only

The First Mention Rate is available only in the overall view, not broken down per provider. This is because the metric inherently compares your entity's position against competitors across all responses, and provider-level first mention rates would have too small a sample size for most analyses to be statistically meaningful.

Average Entity Position

Alongside the First Mention Rate, GEOlyze tracks the average entity position -- the mean character position where your entity first appears in AI responses.

What the position number means

  • Lower position = better: A position of 50 means your entity first appears around character 50 in the response -- very early, typically in the first sentence.
  • Higher position = later mention: A position of 500 means your entity first appears roughly 500 characters into the response, likely after several other topics or competitors have been discussed.

How position relates to first mention rate

These two metrics together paint a complete picture:

ScenarioFirst Mention RateAverage PositionInterpretation
IdealHigh (70%+)Low (< 100)You are consistently mentioned first and early
Good but lateHigh (70%+)High (> 300)You are mentioned first, but responses are lengthy before getting to recommendations
CompetitiveMedium (30-70%)Low (< 100)When you are mentioned, it is early, but competitors often beat you
Needs workLow (< 30%)High (> 300)You are rarely first and appear late in responses

How First Mention Is Determined

GEOlyze analyzes the raw text of each AI response and identifies:

  1. The character position of the first occurrence of your entity name.
  2. The character positions of the first occurrence of each configured competitor entity.
  3. Whether your entity's position is lower (earlier) than all competitors.

Edge cases

  • Only your entity mentioned: If no competitors are mentioned in a response, that response counts as a first mention (you are mentioned first by default among competitors).
  • No entities mentioned: If neither your entity nor any competitor is mentioned, the response is excluded from the calculation.
  • Same position: In the extremely rare case where your entity and a competitor appear at the exact same character position (e.g., in a table), your entity is considered tied, not first.

GEO / SEO Context

Why Being First Matters

Research in traditional search has long established that the #1 result receives disproportionately more clicks than the #2 result. The same principle applies to AI-generated responses:

  • Primacy effect: The first item mentioned in a list or narrative is remembered most. Cognitive psychology shows that the first recommendation encountered receives the most consideration.
  • Implicit endorsement: When an AI leads with your brand, it implies that your brand is the best or most relevant answer.
  • Attention decay: Users' attention diminishes as they read through longer responses. Being mentioned first captures peak attention.
  • Truncation risk: Some AI interfaces truncate long responses. If your brand appears late, it may be cut off entirely.

The difference between first mention and mere mention

Consider two AI responses to "What are the best project management tools?":

Response A (first mention):

"Asana is widely regarded as one of the best project management tools, offering robust task management, timeline views, and team collaboration features. Other popular options include Monday.com and Trello..."

Response B (late mention):

"There are many project management tools available. Monday.com offers a visual interface. Trello provides kanban boards. Basecamp focuses on simplicity. Asana is another option with task management features..."

In both cases, Asana is mentioned. But in Response A, Asana receives the implicit #1 endorsement. In Response B, it appears as an afterthought.

Tips for Improving Your First Mention Rate

1. Be the definitive answer

AI systems tend to mention first the entity they consider most relevant or authoritative. To be that entity:

  • Ensure your website clearly communicates what you do and who you serve.
  • Use precise, confident language on your key pages.
  • Address the specific queries your target audience asks.

2. Dominate your niche

If you cannot be first for broad queries, narrow your focus. AI systems are more likely to mention you first for specific, niche queries where you have deep expertise:

  • Target long-tail queries rather than generic ones.
  • Create specialized content for specific use cases.
  • Position yourself as the expert in a defined segment.

3. Leverage structured data

Organization and Product schema markup help AI systems understand what you offer and when to recommend you. The clearer your structured data, the more likely AI is to recognize you as the primary answer for relevant queries.

4. Build brand salience

The more prominently your brand appears across the web, the more likely AI systems are to mention you first:

  • Consistent presence on review sites and directories.
  • Active participation in industry publications.
  • Strong social media presence with consistent branding.
  • Press coverage and thought leadership.

5. Optimize for question-answer patterns

Many AI queries are phrased as questions. If your content directly answers these questions -- especially in FAQ format with schema markup -- AI systems are more likely to lead with your brand as the answer.

6. Monitor and respond to competitor positioning

Use GEOlyze's Competitor Analysis to understand which competitors are being mentioned first instead of you. Analyze their content strategy and identify what makes AI prefer them for specific queries.

Interpreting Changes

Rate increasing

A rising First Mention Rate is a strong positive indicator:

  • Content authority growing: Your content is being recognized as the primary answer for more queries.
  • Brand awareness improving: AI systems are associating your brand more strongly with your domain.
  • Competitor displacement: You are effectively taking the top position from competitors.

Rate decreasing

A declining rate may indicate:

  • New competitor entering: A new player in your space with strong content may be displacing you.
  • Competitor GEO improvements: An existing competitor has improved their content or visibility.
  • Content staleness: Your content may be outdated compared to more recent competitor content.
  • Prompt set changes: If you added new prompts that target areas where you are not yet dominant, the overall rate may temporarily decrease.

Correlation with other metrics

  • First mention rate up, overall mention rate stable: You are being mentioned at the same frequency, but in a better position. Your content positioning is improving.
  • First mention rate down, overall mention rate up: You are being mentioned more often, but competitors are also appearing more, and they are being prioritized. You may need more authoritative or differentiated content.
  • First mention rate and mention rate both declining: A systemic issue -- investigate content, technical, and competitive factors comprehensively.

In the trends report, the First Mention Rate is displayed as a timeline chart, showing how your first mention performance evolves over time. This helps identify:

  • Seasonal patterns in AI recommendation behavior.
  • The impact of specific content changes or GEO initiatives.
  • Long-term trends in competitive positioning.
